🎮 Play-to-Earn & GameFi: The New Online Poker Boom? 🃏

I'm finalizing a 10-part newsletter series on the online poker boom (2003-2011) and the impact of Black Friday 2011, when the US government cracked down on major poker platforms. As I research, I can’t help but notice the striking similarities between that era and the current Play-to-Earn trend.

Just like online poker promised easy money for anyone with a computer and a bit of nerve, Play-to-Earn models seem to generate wealth out of thin air and are a central part of Game Finance (GameFi).

On the surface, the concept is undeniably appealing. Imagine earning a living, or at least supplementing your income, by playing video games. This is the promise that play-to-earn games offer, leveraging blockchain technology, NFTs, and cryptocurrencies to create in-game economies where players can earn and trade digital assets. In short, the "play-to-earn" phrasing intentionally evokes the idea of new economic opportunities and side hustles.

Despite some early success, the play-to-earn model faces major challenges.

Sustainability: The sustainability of play-to-earn economies is questionable. If new players and capital decline, in-game assets can lose value, leaving players with nothing.

Volatility: Due to market volatility, Crypto and NFT earnings are very unpredictable and unreliable.

Fun vs. Earning: Play-to-earn games often prioritize profit over fun, which can lead to repetitive experiences and players leaving.

Regulation: Crypto and NFT regulations are still changing and as they become more clear this could significantly affect play-to-earn.

The question isn’t whether Play-to-Earn  and  GameFi will survive—but how it will evolve. Will it learn from the pitfalls of online poker, or are we heading toward another moment where online games out run regulation ?

🎲 What’s your take? I’d love to hear your thoughts.  Are we watching the next big evolution in gaming finance—or just history repeating itself?

👇 Drop your thoughts below and follow along  The Black Friday Part 1 will be posted here next week. Stay Tuned.
